"Double Dee!" Even though most of her face hid behind her lilac scarf, her eyes lit up the second she noticed Matt had joined them. Kate could hold up her own, there was no doubt about it. But when it came to magic and being outnumbered? She was always happy to welcome her partner's backup.

She missed her bow and arrows. Hell, one trick arrow would have probably solve this situation in a blink. The goo one not only was a great trap, but considering how disgusting it feels? It was impossible not to let that distract you. Specially when you're a blonde with such incredible hair.

For a moment Kate's almost tempted to ask which products she uses.

There isn't much time to think. And shooting one of them on the leg would still give one of those women time to fight back, while the other potentially kept Lestat under the spell.

"Lestat! Don't look up!" Kate aimed up. A distraction is what they need. Two, three, four gunshots and all three women and Lestat were suddenly bathed in sparks. Glass shattered and electric circuits exploded. Kate could have sworn that an elephant had just stomped its foot, but instead her eyes proved her wrong. The spotlights that were supposed to stay on Lestat fell to the stage, almost as if they craved cutting the distance between them and the vampire.

It worked. The women cried out, their concentration broken along with the spell that was keeping the vampire bound.

"You stupid, little girl!" The brunette roared, waving a hand that sent both Matt and Kate flying across the opposite side of the stage.

For a moment, the whole world spun around Kate. She feared having hurt her head real bad, maybe having a concussion. It was Matt's desperate voice that brought her back, making her grit her teeth and grunt as her palms found the dark, textured floor of the stage. She pushed herself up, her whole body complaining after that fall, as she pushed herself up to her knees.

And saw Matt practically hanging from Lestat's hold on his throat.

"No!" It lasted a second or two, but panic rose and froze Kate's veins until she noticed Matt move for himself. Soon, he was dropped down on her side. Instantly, Kate crawled towards him, Kate's upper body shielding Matt as she looked up at Lestat with defiance.

But Lestat sounded almost uninterested now. He dropped a plan on their laps instead.

Behind him, Kate could see the women who had attacked them. The Task Force. Few moved, nobody was fully conscious.

"Take care of them but don't kill anyone. Please." Kate had no weapons anymore and was well aware that she wasn't strong enough to fight someone like the man that was, without a doubt, a centuries old vampire. This wasn't makeup or special effects.

What if Lestat changed his mind?

He could tear their throats apart in a blink.

Kate shifted, covering even more of Matt's body with her own.

They would have to get to him over her dead body.

Only then realizing she had been holding her breath, Kate's shoulders sagged as she sighed. Matt was getting on his feet, helping her rise on her own, their bodies never breaking contact. "And I've got you." For a brief moment, it was just them in the world. This had not been their toughest battle, it was probably the shortest one. But they both were very aware that they were overpowered there.

Pulling down her scarf from her face, Kate kissed Matt. Her lips found then his helmet, the spot between his eyes. Everything was alright. They would be okay.

Well aware that Greg knew who they were, at least who she was, Kate didn't try to hide her identity as the large man came to them, towering over the couple. "Yeah, right now that sounds good." She glanced Matt's way, just to be safe. "Right?" Fisk might send someone looking for them. It wouldn't hurt, keeping a low profile for the rest of the evening.

Knowing she could trust him, Kate reached out and placed a hand on Greg's arm. "Hey, you were incredible out there. You are aware that you handled that so well that you sure saved many lives?" She needed to give this guy a raise at the very least. "We'll talk later about this once this whole deal--" Still not quite letting go of Matt, she used her free hand to gesture vaguely. "Once it all calms down."

Following Greg's instructions, the duo was soon out. Matt managed to steal a big jacket from the backstage, enough to hide most of his uniform. The helmet made it in a bag. With her hood up, Kate hoped she was not getting too much attention. Hoping the hotel would have some painkillers, they eventually made it to reception, using the names Greg had given them.

Lestat definitely paid no expenses.

[ooc: Oh, no, don't apologize! I think it was very fitting. Kate has no superpowers or fitting weapons. It's only realistic for things to end shortly in a situation like that one.]

Completely cracked, the screen on Kate's phone showed one social network before she hopped onto the next one. Official news channels, smaller journalism accounts and influencers all covered just the one thing, what they were now calling the vampire Lestat's night of terror.

"Huh?" Matt's raspy voice pulled Kate out of her spell. "You sure? You -- Yeah, okay. Thank you." There was no arguing, Matt would prioritize looking after her no matter what. Kate knew his style just like she knew that walk. Matt slightly favored one leg as he moved with a certain stiffness. And yet he was already off to bring her some water. It was his love language, looking after others first.

Following his advice, Kate sat down and allowed the couch to practically swallow her. It felt heavenly. Was it her ribs that had taken the worst part of it all? Probably. They would have to check in with Claire later. But right now, a simple comfortable couch was doing wonders for her aching body.

Lestat had joined them and, from the other corner of the room Kate welcomed him quietly. The elephant in the room was a bloodsucking one and Kate couldn't stop thinking of what he said before.

It is only fitting the choice to burn be his. You may not like what his answer is.

The taste of copper was still present in her mouth. A split lip she couldn't stop worrying, sucking on it was a bad habit, one that made the taste return stronger than before as the wound opened up again. Was Lestat aware of that simply by sharing the room?

"Were those..?"

Just as Kate spoke up, Gregory caught up with her. Heavy hooded eyes looked up at him patiently. She shook her head to his question. "Can you check on Matt first? I'm okay, I swear. All I need is some Tylenol if you have some. Matt took the worst part." The fight had started much earlier outside of the stadium, after all.

Kate's attention returned to Lestat once they were on their own again.

"Were they vampires? Those women."

"Witches." the word echoed past Kate's lips, a sense of awe being impossible to hide. Kate had not yet seen real magic. Mary's powers? She figured it was something different. Sure, these women did not have a cape or the sparkly portals Doctor Strange could summon.

It was still a whole new universe to Kate.

The weight of it was still hitting her when Lestat spoke again. Lestat, her idol.

"Huh? Oh, it's no big deal!" Kate waved a hand dismissively. "It's sort of what Matt and I do." There was no point in pretending it wasn't so or in being humble. Not when Matt was in full Daredevil gear.

At his next question, Kate eyed the bottle of painkillers and hesitated. A snort followed, hearing that Matt was refusing Greg's help. "I'm shocked to the core," Kate confirmed before her laugh was interrupted by a grimace. Yep, her ribcage was being a bitch. "Yeah, I probably need this checked. Once I convince Matt to get his checked."

Her attention moved back onto Lestat. "What about you? Those witched hurt you, too."

The second Matt placed the glass of water down, Kate reached for the painkillers. There was a pause though, in which her hand barely ghosted his leg for recognition, mindful of not putting pressure against a spot that might hurt him. "Thank you, babe."

With Matt and Lestat having their little exchange, Kate took her time to take her pills and down a mouthful of water as she watched the pair. And also Gregory. Greg, who now also knew of his boss' secret. Greg, who could sell her out and Matt to, well, not Kingpin. But the media. Could they trust him? As much as Kate still clings to her need to trust on people, the thought of how her mother had hid a whole secret life was still stuck in her heart like a sharp thorn.

And yet, the little familiar exchange between Greg and Lestat made her smile.

"Fisk's Task Force is after vigilantes," Kate confirmed. "But today was more about sending a message." Greg had approached her again, no doubt ready to offer his knowledge on first aid. With a grimace, she sat more upright and unzipped her hoodie, rolling up her t-shirt for him to assess the damage. "Fisk is on a war for control of this city. And his main tool is fear."

The intimate exchanges between both men Kate had taken for granted until now, but they soon smacked her like a bucket of ice cold water. It took her brain a moment to kickstart when Greg addressed her.

"Huh? Oh! Right, of course! Could you? Shit, I feel like such an asshole, forgetting about that." She groaned, guilt genuinelly washing over her. How could she forget about the people she was suppossed to look after? Those who put a roof on her head thanks to their hard work? She'd have to make up for it to them, somehow.

Thanking Greg a few times as he took care of it, Kate turned to Matt then. "Do you wanna grab a bite? I haven't had anything since lunch." And honestly, Kate knew she would starve until the show was done, but Lestat's concert was worth the wait. Now? She was glad to accept his hospitality.

With a grunt, she got on his feet.

"So, you eat human food, too? It's not just..." She pointed at her neck. "Wanna join us?"

Kate's smile was a tired one, but as genuine as always. She closed the distance between herself and Matt, caressing his cheek. "Anything by boring." That was an understatement.

Pecking his lips, Kate took her time and walked with Matt towards the kitchen, taking liberties as they picked from Lestat and his team's leftovers. There was beans and beef and rice, along many dishes Kate did not know, but was willing to try. And of course, the pizza.

Even though the microwave was loud and her hearing wasn't as good as Matt's, Lestat's loud french curses were easy to hear. Could that be...? No, surely not. For all she knew, his ex had moved on, why would he be in contact with Lestat still? He could be, though. After all, it turned out that Lestat was the real deal.

"I can't believe we're at his hotel..." Kate sighed, unaware that even though they had a million things to worry about and consider about tonight, she was still star-struck when it came to her latest, biggest, rock idol.

If he was a murderer he could have had a huge banquet, to be fair.

Then, she continued in whispers. "You think he and Greg...? I mean, I know they're working together and all, but -- God, this is probably how people saw us before we started dating."

Shit, was Lestat yelling louder now?

With the adrenaline of the evening having worn off, there really was nothing better than feeling Matt so close. Kate knew he was being careful, making sure his arm around her shoulders was not really a weight. Even if she was, she'd rather have him there than with some distance between them.

"I don't think anyone could have guessed this is where we'd end the night." Shit, it was the perfect setting for a novel sequel. An Evening With The Vampire Lestat.

Ok, sure, it sounds a little like the title for a talk show. But it could be a nice sequel! The vampire opening up, telling them his story, his perspective on the first novel and what he's been up to since he became a rock star. Offering to turn them? Shit, that would be such a plot twist!

But not as big a Lestat and Greg being a thing. Kate's jaw dropped as Matt confirmed her suspicion. Matt had ways to know these things and Kate trusted his judgement blindly. 'Oh, my God!', she mouthed. "Do you think -- Shit, you think he has a coffin here? That would be so freaky. But kinda fun." Kate's whispers were truly excited ones. "You think he turned him? Does Greg have a heartbeat? This is so crazy!"

As relieving as it was to hear that Greg was still human, it was the mention of the coffin being there what really got Kate's heartbeat going with excitement. Could it be the same coffin Lestat and Louis de Pointe du Lac shared? No, wait, there was the fire...

Either way, it's so cool. "Oh, my God. Is it bad that I kinda wanna see it? I mean, it's like so iconic." And Matt had a point. Kate's jaw dropped as her hands practically smacked her face, clamping over her mouth. Was there a chance Lestat was listening to her fangirling? God, that would be so embarrassing.

As self-conscious as she was, Kate suddenly shared a sheepish laugh about it with Matt. "God, you'd think I've got used to that sort of thing with you!" She pointed out, still in whispers.

Finally carrying the meal back to the common area, Greg caught her up with things. Kate sighed heavily, "honestly, you guys make my life so much easier. We have the best team ever." Sure, she wasn't looking forward to review anything except her pillow tomorrow morning. But Kate was aware that she was needed in the office. Everyone was working hard, she ought to keep up with them. "You're a saint, I swear."

Or Matt's catholicism was a real big influence lately.

"Have you even sat down tonight, Greg? Seriously, you need a break yourself, shit. Have you had water or eaten something?" Kate eagerly encouraged him to join them, even though she was not exactly hosting here.

Probably, after years of working for the Bishops, Gregory would recognize a little of Eleanor when Kate took the reins of something.

"Are you joining us, mister -- I mean, Lestat." Kate turned towards Matt and, not bothering to lower her voice, pretended to be sharing a secret. "He doesn't want us to call him by his surname."

Matt and Kate were so used to sharing a space that they almost didn't need any words. She served him exactly what she knew he would eat and he handed her the glass of water before she even needed to ask. Kate always had a sip before she even took the first bite.

At the mention of their obvious secrets, Kate paused mid-drinking.

"Yeah." Carefully, she placed the glass down. "I think it goes without saying that we all know some big secrets now. And exposing them could cost us a lot." Kate eyed Greg. The guy could blackmail her if he wanted. Sell them to Fisk and see more money he's even dreamed of. Lestat? He didn't seem to care about those games. And in a way, he flaunted his identity to the world. It wasn't much of a secret, it was just hard to believe.

Kate leaned towards Matt and looked at him.

They had never had this talk before. What if someone outed them? They would be arrested, at the very least. What kind of charges would they face? Fisk could execute them on the streets and claim his officers did it on self-defense. He'd talk more shit in the media than he already does.

"What Matt and I do matters. And we'll give our lives to keep doing it."

Kate's doubt over Gregory wasn't one that weighted lightly on her heart. The man had been part of Bishop Security's family for as long as she could remember. He had always been kind, attentive and went out of his way when it came to efficiency and, most important, giving a hand. As he had proven again tonight.

But both Kate's mother and father had also proven that, no matter how much you think you know a person, they can still sometimes surprise you. And not always for the best.

She was thankful when Matt stepped in, explaining their concerns and observations better than she could right now.

Even more so, she was truly grateful at Greg for that olive branch, that gesture of good faith. She smiled at the older man fondly. Remembering Christmas parties, hours after school spent at the office with Kate nosing around, talking to workers and making friends.

It was the strangest part she had ever played, this transition into being called their 'boss'.

They ate in silence for a moment, Lestat's bad mood still obvious. Kate decided she might as well offer a branch as well.

"So, these witches... They came after you for coming out of the vampire closet?" Maybe not the best wording for the situation, given the circumstances. "I mean, for the book and the making vampires a public thing and all."
